Very off topic but this post might help another Olympus SP-800UZ Digital Camera owner thinking they have fried their camera and contemplate $$$ repairs or replacement.
I went to plug the USB cable into the camera to lift images… the end that fits into the camera “should” only fit one way, but if you don’t look, and had too much vegemite on your toast, it will quite easily slide in – the wrong way up. What happens if it goes in the wrong way up? I was booting up the PC at the time and Windows said there was a USB overload and was shutting down in 15 seconds, which it did.
So I pulled the cable out of the camera and realised I’d put it in the wrong way up, duh, put it in the right way and tried… no communication with the PC, no life in the camera. Tried another (working) USB port (in case I’d fried the USB port itself), no go. I left it for a few minutes thinking heat may prevent it from working, no go. At this point I think I’ve fried my camera and will never be able to charge it or remove images from it again. It turned on ok, but the USB connection was not gonna happen.
How to fix it? Remove the battery, give it a couple of minutes, replace the battery and all should be dandy.
