Olympus SP-800UZ

Very off topic but this post might help another Olympus SP-800UZ Digital Camera owner thinking they have fried their camera and contemplate $$$ repairs or replacement.

I went to plug the USB cable into the camera to lift images… the end that fits into the camera “should” only fit one way, but if you don’t look, and had too much vegemite on your toast, it will quite easily slide in – the wrong way up. What happens if it goes in the wrong way up? I was booting up the PC at the time and Windows said there was a USB overload and was shutting down in 15 seconds, which it did.

So I pulled the cable out of the camera and realised I’d put it in the wrong way up, duh, put it in the right way and tried… no communication with the PC, no life in the camera. Tried another (working) USB port (in case I’d fried the USB port itself), no go. I left it for a few minutes thinking heat may prevent it from working, no go. At this point I think I’ve fried my camera and will never be able to charge it or remove images from it again. It turned on ok, but the USB connection was not gonna happen.

How to fix it? Remove the battery, give it a couple of minutes, replace the battery and all should be dandy.

Disk usage warning

If you recieve an email warning similar to the following:

The account with the username ‘xxx’ (xxx.com.au), is running out of disk space.
Please remove some files from this account, or ask the administrator to increase your disk quota.
This account has used 80.96% (485.73/600.00 MB) of its allocated disk space.

Typical Disk Space Usage warningPOP3 email (recommended)
Mail can not stay on the server indefinitely as it will eventually fill up your allocated space. When email accounts are setup correctly, emails stay on the server until they are read, and then for a period of 0-x days (your choice). Once read, they are stored on your device/s, not on the server.

Firstly, you need to log in to your cpanel, navigate to Files section, choose Disk Space Usage and establish where the space has been used. It is more than likely in mail.

This is normally because one of your devices is telling the server to store emails on the server. You need to check email settings on all devices that access your email, see this article on email settings as a guide. You can also google your specific device to find where to find the delete emails from server options.

Once you have settings correct, then you can remove old read emails from the server. This will not normally delete emails from your devices (see IMAP email below), so to be extra careful, try deleting 6 old emails from server, then check that they are still on your computer or the device of your choice. Adjust your settings on each device if necessary.

To delete emails from server, see this article.

IMAP email
If you have configured your email as an IMAP account, it will sync the mailbox to all devices, so if you delete email from the phone, you delete it on the server and the desktop machine. If using IMAP you will need to copy/save emails on a regular basis to a local machine, so that the IMAP account storage can be limited to fit within your allocated space.

500 Internal Server Error

Website down? It’s possibly been hacked. Check with your website host first to make sure the hosting itself is still running ok, but then it will be a case of checking website files, and in particular the .htaccess file for evidence of hacking or change. Download/FTP a copy of your .htaccess file and view/edit with a html editor (ie Dreamweaver), upload and recheck website.

The .htaccess file can sometimes be modified by upgrades of website or plugins, so as usual – please make backups of the website before doing any upgrades.

If your site has been hacked, make sure you change all usernames and passwords where possible, for FTP, WordPress site and cPanel hosting etc

Delete bulk comments

If you are unfortunate enough to get spammed, you may be pounded by thousands of spam comments. Please consult your own IT professional for advice, but I have found this tip works perfectly. To remove unapproved comments manually could take hours (20 at a time from within WordPress Dashboard/Comments). To remove thousands of comments in seconds, I logged in to my hosting account (cpanel), navigated to “phpMyAdmin”, selected the database from list on left (corresponds to domain username), then chose the “SQL” tab, and added the following:

DELETE FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = '0'

Then hit “Go” to run the SQL query, and spam gone.

Delete Emails from server

When setting up a new Email account in your Microsoft Outlook (or similar) you must ensure that emails are not stored on the server indefinitely or you will eventually run out of hosted space. Typically in your Email account settings, “More Settings”, “Advanced” tab, see “Delivery” – “Leave a copy of message on the Server” – make sure this is set to less than 14 days or unchecked completely. This does not affect emails on your computer, only how long it keeps a copy on the hosting server.

Firstly, make sure those settings have been changed so it doesn’t happen again.

If you are not confident with making changes to email accounts or deleting files from your cPanel, please ask an IT friend to assist you.

Then delete the excess old emails from the server by logging in to your cPanel, navigate to “Files”, “File Manager” and make sure to select “Show Hidden Files (dot files)” before going into the File Manager. Then navigate to your “mail” folder, then view each account to find where excess files are being stored and delete excess/older files, which are typically in the “cur” folder of each account.
